Why do I miss so much stuff?

Do you play OTB?

Take up checkers instead?
How original! Took a lot of imagination to come up with that one.

Yes.
What's you rating?
OTB? I don't know that I have one? I've played some tournaments, but they were nothing like I see in pictures--with a whole bunch of tables and many contestants. The tournaments I've played were in the basement of a book store, with about a dozen chess players vying for a $15.00, $10.00, or $5.00 gift certificate. I wasn't told whether or not these were FIDE sanctioned tournaments.

Those big tournaments cost a lot of money. A few years ago, I was going to actually play The World Open(2006, I believe), but then , when I started to "train", which means playing only rated standard games on the Internet, between 1800-2000 w/ a time limit of 180min. game, I lost something like 8 out of 10 games. That convinced me that spending $400.00 to $700.00 on entry fee, hotel, gas, and food just to get annihilated seemed impractical

Without looking now, would you know what's on your right-hand side in the room you are in?

That's a trick question! We don't have a right-hand side?

I can't even find my right hand.

I think the reason you miss what is obvious on first try because you stress yourself to find a solution. You force yourself to find a solution in no time.
under stress it is sometimes difficult to think clearly.
on second try you can relax and therefore solve it without trying.

I'm pretty sure woodshover's "stress" is finding his shoes before he has to go to work. Good try though!

That's what I was "training" for, under 1600. I was told to play 1800-2000 online to train for the under 1600. I think it was an accurate judgement.

I once played in the World Amateur Champs (2003) I finished 100th

See?
That's obvious as hell on the second try? On the Tactics trainer, I mean.
