nerd is weak. Its a way for stupid people to penalize smart people for having such an advantage over them. Often its a way for people to harass those who enjoy intellectual rather than physical recreation.

The only time I believe this term should ever be applied, is to people who play too many video games. In truth, if you sit down and play eight hours straight, something is wrong. A little harassment may get you outside. Most the time though its a BS label.

Probably meant to be an insult.  But depending on where you are at, it might be in style to be a nerd.  You get to do all the cool techno stuff and when other people are lagging on their electronics lab, the so called nerd has smoked everybody and got it done.

you guys need to stop being such nerds...jks

I am no doubt considered a nerd and frankly have come to self identify as such.  In school the public labelling is no fun to be sure, but I am happiest in nerdy company.  Frankly anything would be better than trying to fit in with  and please the rude people you described.  As I got older people stopped bugging me, hopefully this will also be true for your friend.

Alright, anyone who has an account on a chess website and posts comments discussing what it means to be a nerd IS A NERD. YOU NERDS!!

Wait a second...! Oh crap. I'm a nerd too then.

I was on the bus the other day and listening to a nerd conversation. Essentially it was about some Role Playing Game or something. One of them was saying that he had put a teleporter on the Sun and lured his enemies into it. Oh boy, I was ending myself.

Anyhoo, some nerds take it too far. I know that certain things draw negitive attention-being early twenties and having such discussions, a c'mon.

Also, folk think that stupid people call nerds, nerds, because the nerd is smarter, ya ya ya, this is a wrong assumption. I know smart/talented people that have called a nerd a nerd. If real proper nerds were so darn smart they'd have street smarts aswell.

a nerd is apparently a know it all and obsesive over sometyhing.....my brother calls me a nerd, but come on, its just a way for dumbasses to try and make themselves feel good. if you ask me, being a nerd at something you like is nothing to feel bad about. whoever called you a nerd is a fag.im 14, so i should know.

I can't speak for Rael, but I think it was meant to be a humorous comment. Made me laugh anyway.

What's the big deal if someone calls you a nerd anyway? Is there really any point in being bothered by some hard to define label being slapped on you?

Although, with that said, I'm probably the easiest person to irritate. :) But being called a nerd is something that I take as a compliment. I reckon that anyone who does try to use it as an insult is either being facecious or displaying envy of someone's apparent intelligence.

We both wish he were. But, maybe being 14 years old makes you a scholar of fags? Wtf. Umm. Huh. Somethings wrong here, on all sorts of levels.

The labels you are so upset about only have the power that you let them have. But here you are buying into the importance of who is and isn't a nerd. What's completely ironic is that you seem to be responding in all seriousness to someone who was obviously being tongue in cheek. Rael has clearly moved beyond the labels of children. He does what he enjoys because he is an adult without worrying what children are labelling as "cool".

Yes, it's really something we should all try to mentally transcend.

 Hah.

People are always the harshest judges of themselves.  Someone who would belittle you and call you names is really suffering on the inside, no matter how much they want you to believe otherwise.  Once you realize this, you'll refuse to take an ignorant comment personally.  Be yourself, and be happy with who you are.

kyuudou

It's kind of already been said before, but I'm going to put my own spin on it because I want to. Tongue out

Anyone who calls you a nerd is trying to make you feel bad about being smart. Also, they're trying to incite a reaction out of you. If you own up to it and take it to mean something good, it takes the power away from the name-caller and turns it into something that works for you instead of against you. If you get upset about it, you're giving that person what they want - which is to make others feel worse about themselves so that they (the name-caller) can feel better about themself. It's an "If I take you down a peg, that moves me up a peg" sort of sentiment, and it is completely self-serving.

It's kind of funny, but some of my students are baffled when I tell them that I'm a nerd and proud to be one. They can't fathom why someone would want to be (stereotypically) unpopular, uncool, etc. Even when I explain to them that that's just the mold/stereotype that I best fit and that I'm proud of who I am, they still only kind of get it. Teenagers really are amusing.
