I usually try to trade queens when my queen is worse than my opponents. I think that's one of the principles of trade. Trade down, when you're getting rid of a very powerful piece.
Why Do Some
When someone brings their queen out early I like to kick it around while developing my pieces and then try and trade it off. My thinking is that it is their favourite piece and without it they won't have another plan.
Thanks for the thoughts, Chatty your comment is very insightful your right it locks me into a mindset.

I agree with this.. If it's out early, get rid of it early.
Other than that, I try and trade when appropriate or when the game's at a stand still.
You should always think before you trade down. Don't trade down your army if it doesn't help you in any way.
If you find you do better with the queens off the board then I suggest you focus on some tactics training. With the queens gone the position is less sharp, and perhaps you do less well when there are more tactical complications. You might try chesstempo.com, or the the tactics trainer here if you are a paid member (they limit you to two tactics a day if you have a basic account.) As others have said, you generally only want to trade if you feel if it is to your advantage. Trading major pieces can help dull an opponent's attack if they are pressing you fairly hard. Also, if there is an imbalance in material trades generally favor the person who has more material, as you are threatening to reduce the situation into a endgame where you have the advantage.
As with every other thing in chess, always calculate the tactics before you start swapping wood.
I am a newb and got a question. I am only a 900 point player and find I play much better if I pull off a queen trade in late opening or early in the middle game. This seems to really upset some people. I thought part of chess was about looking ahead and destroying your opponents ability to react. I generally search out players that are 75 to 100 points above me and I have a 55% win ratio.
Am I being rude are do some people lose it when their plan goes south.
