Just to contextualise it, what may I ask have you devoted your life to? I know that I have devoted mine to just getting by, but how have you devoted yours to the extent that other peoples devotions appear sad?
As recently suggested many times here--its sexy. Was trying my best to abstain from that post and topic but since I can weigh in here what the hell. Yes chess is sexy. Nothing sexier than intelligence imho.

It relaxes me and I meet great people here.
Basically CHESS is a hobby and serves as relaxation, but theres a system to it that makes it intruiging, our style of play could reflect our personalities-this is NOT scientifically proven just an idea. CHESS is also a way of exercising and seeing our mental powers as compared to the other individual/s or computer/s. We play war without having to kill somebody or destroy things, in that little piece of time we are the General, Emperor, King etc... its a fantasy world.It's Fantastic.

I love playing chess because it's all about thinking what your opponent next move is. The best chess players know how to play both side of the board at any times. In many ways, you are your opponent.

i think this game is good for the mind... u have 2 concentrate and think 2 win, one mistake during the game and its game over thats why i like it
It's my hobby but I see the game as much like life. Ups and downs, happy and sad, win and lose. The point is to go on having fun and attempting to improve.
To me it is a game of life. It reflects so well our inadequacies. our fears of pressure from certain angles. Our enablility to a move because our brains do not see that far ahead. So many possibilties. So many answers. So much personality, fear, arrogance, hope, love, hate all symbolized on a board. We find out who we are when we compare our games to one another. when we analyze our game afterwards with other people to see the good and the bad of the past game. Somedays we feel lazy and it shows on the board. Somedays we feel great and we are a force to be reconned with. i think if we analyze our games, we can have so many tools to become better people.
Or you can just move the peices like i do. lol.
