seriously, every game I play someone tries and trades my knight for their bishop, isn't the bishop like .5% better than a knight?

tygxc

It is even 10% better.

They have the same value rating so the engine doesn’t see anything wrong with it if you don’t start losing but the idea that bishop is better is subjective because people see “more spaces more usefulness” they are both very good for their own reasons like knights are good defenders since they can defend while being safely behind a pawn while also being the only piece that jump over pieces and a bishop is good at pinning and holding diagonals to trap pieces the reason they mostly same value is because they both aren’t very great at checkmating alone like the rook and queen (is a piece can’t checkmate alone its more of its harder for knights and bishops).

It depends on the position. I’d rather have a knight in a closed position to hop around without being blocked.

Also, if I see my bishop is going to be bad after they try and kick it to release the pin on the knight, I will trade

Piece values change throughout the game, depending on the needs of the position.

Sometimes the bishop is better than a knight, and you should hang onto the bishop.

Sometimes the bishop is worse than a knight, though, and you should trade the bishop away ...

A lot depends on the pawn structure, which can greatly affect the mobility of your pieces.
