I am not Russian. But I actually got the chance to play a Russian once! So I guesss that's why!

Was an intense 3-hour struggle, with me on the edge of defeat the entire game, I managed to somehow hold on, crash through, and finally win the game.

A lady, exasperated at the result, asked my opponent "How could you lose?? You're Russsian!"

And he answered "He iz ..... better.....player!"

That one sentence made all those years of studying chess worthwhile, right there!

Well said Varelse.
I think I've something to add in the chess achievement thread

I play chess to satisfy my highly competitive nature. I like physical sports, but need a mind sport to accompany it.

I don't think competitive is a nature. I think everyone is equally competitive.

Therefore, everyone plays chess. Q.E.D.

No my friend nature is a competitive. If you observe animals carefully, you will see they partake in the same sports that the rest of us love and cherish.

netzach

Am part Lithuanian so that's good enough to play chess.

TheMushroomDealer

Playing chess isn't about your nationality - and btw soon Chinese ppl and others from Asia are gonna overcome us so I don't get the Russian thing. I have won plenty of them.

tonightatsix

Didn't chess originate in India?

2mooroo

My dad got in a bar fight with a Russian once.

Eight stars to the latest two answers. It seems Anand is very far away from being russian or prussian, and i believe vodka is brain damageing people very early in their lives (miserable cold as neptune). Be smart and get away from bad drinks, bad weather. Laughing

fabelhaft

If Kramnik loses his next game there won't be a single Russian in the top 5, I wonder if that ever happened before.

fabelhaft

Using Chessmetrics before the Elo system it turns out that the last time top 5 was without Russian players was during World War I, and then only because Alekhine fell out of the list because of inactivity while in practice being clearly stronger than then top 5 Vidmar. But sometime between the demise of Chigorin and rise of Alekhine (before World War I) there was a period without a Russian top 5 player.

Gizmo

were in the rules it says russians only lol

csalami10

What the heck are you talking about? There are only 5 russian players in the top20. Sure, they have the best chess schools, but currently they are far from being best.
