Why do YOU play chess?

Do you have a goal? Do you want to be a professional? Making living out of it? Just enjoying it? Something else?

For me personally I set the goal to achieve any chess title , I started chess 4 and a half years ago and my goal is to play chess until I get a CM title at least and then I will decide what is my next goal, quit chess (family, $ , etc. Other problems ), play just for fun, go professional (maybe) , I don't know it yet , because my first goal is still stands and I haven't achieved it yet so it's to early think about the next one.

So why do you play chess?

I did not said I will go pro read the thread carefully, before answering.

I said u don't know what's going to happen after I reach my goal, I might quit, play just for fun, go pro, be a cosmonaut, no one knows it's just endless possibilities, future .Understand?

You didn't really answer my thread question, why do you play for fun ,? What do you mean for fun? Why you don't run for fun? Why do you play chess? I need more open answer and what is fun for you? It may vary in comparison, some people play online for fun , some go chess clubs every day for fun etc....

I played chess with friends and always lost. Not fond of losing so I started playing online and studying. Got hooked from there. I have a personal goal to reach expert but no deadline to get there. I'm a guitarist first, chess second

I think you have a slight communication issue. You did say you might go pro, didn't you? I asked a question related to your post. Get off your high horse and answer. You know what fun is? Chess is fun to me. I also run, for fun and health. Now if you need help with the definition of fun I can help.

I have a love-hate relationship with chess. I love to play it; I hate being a grandpatzer. Still it is a good exercise for my ageing brain and I find the games often quite entertaining. My goal is to try not to look like a moron in my games. I wish I had the eidetic memory and the ability to visualize a chessboard in my head but nature did not bless me with these, and I think they are essential to being a master or grandmaster. But, I play on, and usually enjoy it.

Age shouldn't be an obstacle, keep going, never quit ! If you can't be a GM , you still can be a strong, respected player, keep it up.

Yes , any problem with that !?

I enjoy the game and the competition. My goal is to improve my ratings in blitz and 15 10.

Chess must be the only sport/activity where almost everybody starts out with the intention to be a high rated GM in a couple of years. Do they ever look at the ratio of GM (1541  at the moment) compared to the number of 'normal' chess players (e.g 17.000.000+ on chess.com) ?
