Why do we play chess? Because, our losses constantly remind us of our lack of knowledge about the game, and this then causes us pain or at least curiosity - and so we come back to the game again and again to learn more. And of course, the more we learn, the more we know how ignorant we truly are, and so the cycle of knowledge, knowledge-gaps, pain, curiosity, learning, knowledge!, knowledge gaps repeats and repeats. But when answering the question "Why do I play chess?" I am more likely to formulate some watered down version of Hans Ree's explanation: "Chess is beautiful enough to waste your life for!"

Yep, chess is like a box of chocolotes. Just like life. Chess is life. :P Tons of things keep me coming back to chess. It's such an amazing game, small and so little rules but so complicated the world's best genius could not win. It is also a very fun activity for me, as I have a local cafe and also a chess club just a few blocks away. I am competitive so I enjoy tournaments even more than casual. It's a very mezmerizing game, hard to get away from.

I play chess because it is a game of logic and analyzation that, although it can be understood on a very profound level, it can never be completely mastered.

why i play chess? 1. to keep my mind active and young,2. there is both a mental and a physical tingle, jolt, flash when a plan works out or you see "THE" move and it all fits together liek a jig saw puzzle.3. the camraderie and fellowship(if i may use that word) of meeting new people AND discussing on the forums{the fellowship of the king?}. 4. Improving your game over time is almost like a role playing game(you almost step outside of your daily struggles to face this new challenge with new eyes). 5. and most important----it's fun!!!!

its amazing, in a minute we r already on the third page!!

i play chess to improve, challenge myself and its my passion... i simply love chess!! and like some1 said, in video games u just do the same thing all over again but in chess, every match u play is unique!!

i always get lost during chess matches, and then all i think about is chess... for the next half an hour anyway!

To me is has become a way of life, not only has it helped my thinking internally but it also has helped me become a more rounded person. I can see things that are far in the future, I can predict thoughts, movement, and even see 15 to 20 moves ahead of my opponent. This game is the true enlightment to life.

For me, it is entrancing to see how moving a certain piece to a certain square can crush someone's hope.

It's an addiction alright!

I learned the moves when I was really young, then stopped playing for years and years. Meanwhile I bought a portable chess computer, books on it's history, a pc and and chess software to go with it. I still didn't really play, but I kept on thinking about it. Then I found the internet and I surfed on every possible page with the word ''chess'' in it. No games still. Then I remembered my chess software, studied a bit, played and generally lost.

And now here I am, having decided to fully surrender to my addiction.

All I know is this: the benefits from chess are clear and you've all described them perfectly. But do you really think about all that when you keep coming back for more? Whatever it is that makes us play, it's incurable!Laughing

I love the fact that i can be mentally superior to someone twice or even three times my age.. i love victory.

i love chess because it seems so simple but when you really explore it you will find sience, math, and philosophy all in one and those all come together to make an art.

CHESS IS ART!

I love the fact that I can be mentally superior to someone twice or even three times younger than I am. And even if I lose I can beat the little whippersnappers with my cane, at least until their mom or dad comes and stops me.

All humans need something superior to them to hang on it.

woah, i like chess too, but i'd rather give it up so i can do more important stuff.  but the only way i can unchain myself from this addiction is to try to understand what is really going on.  so far, of what i have seen is that many people like to play chess over and over, but never  really learn from their mistakes and keep on committing the same type of weaknesses.  People like to use unsound gambits and strategies and if it works they feel happy and if it doesn't, then there are plenty of other fish to catch.   right now, im very confused about the different types of positions that arise from one simple side up of an opening.  I cant quit on chess now.  first i got to put it in order.  but every game i play is like a slap in the face, taunting me with "you will never dissect me"  Anyways, i feel like american chess players should care more about learning from their mistakes and stop getting used to losing and liking it.  And if you kno you lost, just resign out of respect.

I love the challenge, to me there is nothing else that compares to the feeling you get when you finally find the only move to save a position where you are in big trouble. I'm an extremely competetive person no matter what i am doing but i don't play to prove my superiority over any one i play because i love the game and yes i'm addicted, couldn't picture my life without it.

I think playing chess is alot like playing golf is for some others, no matter how bad you may be at it every once in a while you make a move or play a game that seems (to you anyway) very beautiful and as good as anyone could ever do.  So you keep coming back looking for these kind of wonderful chances.
