Why does nobody say 'good game' anymore?

Here is the great granddaddy of the good game issue:

I always say good game otb. I never say it online. Simply because I can just play another game.

I'm new to this but I agree with congratulating the winner and saying good game. Even if I don't win might as well learn something from it so good from both points of view.

This is what i mean, i have been playing chess for some time, and even though my rating isn't very high, i still have played for a long time and i can tell you from my experience that if i say "gg" my opponent starts trash talking (usually, when they lose)so i feel compelled to start trashtalking my opponent as well, so i waste my time arguing when i could just leave it and go play another match and learn something else. also, in arena tournaments, usually you want to find a match as fast as possible, so you learn not to chat when you play in a lot of arena tournaments.

It’s good sportsmanship. Win or lose always thank someone for the game.

I almost always say good game.  It doesn't matter if it is reciprocated.  It is on me to be a good sport regardless of the other person.

I don’t because I turned off the chat feature. Too many idiots would rather spend the chat and talk shit to try to distract their opponent instead of learning how to play properly.

I say "good game" after a eating a delicious bowl of venison chili.

I believe everyone starting in Online Chess says GG, good luck, so on. After playing hundreds of games, it's normal to lose interest in this informal ritual.

haylow31

It's because it wasn't not a good game. My opponent is terrible!

I've been using the site on and off since 2010, saying "good game" has never been a big thing on here, not sure where people get that idea from.

Some people are talkative, some aren't.

harthacnut

I suspect a lot of it is because the volume of abuse and trash talk means that many players have disabled chat. I would say GG or equivalent more often if chat were enabled, but I've learned from experience not to leave it on, at least not in blitz/rapid games.

Cuz they’re too lazy or probably because they’re a little grumpy. Or maybe they don’t have that habit

DrSpudnik

Grumpy lazy people are the biggest problem these days.

I almost always use the good game feature with the thumbs up prompt.  If it's thumbs down, I suspect a bot or they've stalled or quit.

When you play a lot of online, in different game, 'gg' is used to provoke people or hurt them.
In league of legends, a long time ago when the toxicity started people typed 'gg' at the end of the game to put down enemy team.
Same for hearthstone, people spam emote and say "Well play" which is provocative to the other user.
Same for Clash royal when people spam emote.
In general, like others said a lot of people online lose the good behavior, good manner and play game with a trash behavior.
In this site, a lot of time when people say gg to me, it was because the game was over soon and they wanted to provoke me to end the game and resign.
I feel it's good habit when you can met the person, know him a bit and know it's used to the good meaning of the word cause in reality, a lot of people don't care of opponent online and if you talk to them, it can be bad .

I always say ggs, then they usually answer back.

CocaineInBarca
I would only say it if it the game (defence and attack) were exciting to face. Otherwise it’s not good enough for me if my opponent commit bad blunders haha
lukeluke00

In all my years I never did because I'm a lazy mofo who can't even remember to slide to the chat window to write it. In fact very few of my opponents did or do it, it was never a big thing to begin with, imo.

lukeluke00

Sometimes I remember I actually answered "yes gg" if it was truly a gg. But when it wasn't I told them the truth "That game sucked", even if I won on time or blunder or whatever. Gotta be honest with yourself.
