I am new to it and I love it. Some people turn their "sophisticated noses up"
because they do not like to use their brains. I guess it hurts them.
Yes, most people are pretty numb.

Yeah Doc, but when I'm I am feeling a little numb I go to bed and sleep it off.
It is art and beautiful.
Yet society sees it as a nerdy loser pastime.
As i see or understand it, free thinking in many parts of western world is being dumbed down for a reason from the media.Socialism n or tyranny hate free thinkers.Chess is freedom.
chess is heaven hit the nail on the head. Stupidity is actually "cool" and in some sub cultures (I'm not naming names) you might be risking a beating, perhaps your life, if you try to do well in school. We are even doing away with learning to write in script! My friends and acquaintances that teach college courses tell me of the wailing and gnashing of teeth when students are expected to read an assignment of a chapter, as if it's breaking big rocks into little rocks.
I typed term papers for awhile and it's mind boggling what professors accept as college level writing. Some of my coworkers teach labs in my field at a local college and are frequently told to pass students that are unable to perform the work. This is a program for people in the medical field. When we finally fail as a country it will be because we deserve it. Good luck to our future overlords in getting anything useful out of what seems to be a majority of lazy dumbasses and God help the rest of us.
If you can find it look at an 8th grade school book from the 20's or 30's. It makes you wonder what the hell happened to education.
How does society hate the single most popular game of all time? More books have been written about chess than every sport combined. Around half the worlds population has at least dabbled in chess. I have no idea where this supposed hatred idea comes from.
The fact that more books have been written about chess doesn't make your premise of chess being the most popular game of all time true. It is not really the most popular game of all time. I am not meaning to say chess is trash; you actually only need to start a research on it and you'll discover that.
But one thing I do agree with is that society doesn't actually hate chess either.
its not about hating chess, chess is just the object......
its the sort of, anti-learning thing that people seem to go for.
Learning stuff, being inquisitive, wanting to make a life out of discovery and understanding the world and its principals, these things are slowly becoming anethema to most people, even though the tech is there to do it, the means to get to learn is there.
does any historian remember rome at the time of the library of alexandria?
maybe the people who oppose it most grew up around stuck up people who thought they knew it all....but no one does...no one can
we are just eternal students in a sandbox
the meaning of life is what we make out of the tools that we have
when I went to the university of south Carolina in the 80's most of the science majors (and faculty I think) were not from USA. I worked in a genetic research lab at the time and when I left most of the grad students in that lab working on higher degrees were Chinese. It was an awesome school with great science and physics dept and research. People came from all over the world to go there. I wonder if it's been dumbed down? I'm surprised and dismayed at the lack of curiously in young people today. I work in a microbiology department and different personnel come through for various reasons. Sometimes groups of students are taken on a tour. You would think a bunch of people sitting around looking at Petri dishes with bacteria growing on it would seem interesting to someone. When I am there for student tours I make a special effort to show them cool looking bacteria colonies and mention things like STD's and stuff to spark an interest. gonorrhea should be of interest to everyone.
