Why doesn't white always win?

My rating is under 1000 so I'm pretty crap at this game and therefore expect to make mistakes, I also I expect my opponents to make mistakes. But GM's, in theory, don't make mistakes and if no one makes a mistake then, by virtue of the fact that white always has a move in hand, white should always win -- so why doesn't it?

Just curious.

No, white's advantage on move 0 is too subtle to give him a win with perfect moves. It will be a draw.

GMs make way more mistakes than you think.

Chess has been studied for weeks, it is not yet known if either side has a forced win or draw.

I was watching one game on here with Magnus and another GM. Magnus made one blunder and his opponent made two or three. Granted it was a three minute game and there was time pressure, but people make mistakes.

GMs especially under the 2700 level make tons of mistakes. Reminds me of the Hikaru video where Komodo just 10-0ed him like it was nothing.

Chess is a game which is a draw when both sides make no errors.

Same with checkers.

GMs make mistakes. A mistake for a GM would be a "good" move for us plebs.

Chess is a game where it is likely that perfect play means a draw. In order to win, someone has to make a mistake.

There are more moves than the known stars in the observable universe. Even with engines; or even better AI running a perfect rating there is no way on a human level to know why white or black should always win.

Either side to move, this is a draw, even though white has a pawn.

A pawn is worth more than the first move.

Of course GMs ,make mistakes Also super GMs make mistakes.

But never-the- less

there have been thousands of games played where neither side made a mistake. Those games have always ended in a draw.

In the billions of games played there has never been even one game published where one side won without the other side making a mistake.,

llama47

No true Scotsman ever lost a game without making a blunder.

GMs make mistakes it would appear then, although I expect it would take another GM to notice it. Point taken with the draw situation, I suppose one move isn't a whole lot.

mistakes can be discovered by many.
