I think that chess.com probably deserves the bulk of the credit.
Yes, this 3 year old site was instrumental in keeping this 1000+ year old game alive all those years.

because americans are too busy with their xboxes and such and kids think chess is boring because it doesnt involve gross violence like most video games

There are not enough brains here to fund the beginings of the zombie army.
Zombies are actually rumored to be quite accomplished end game players. The have lousy memories though, so they suck at the opening. You can find many of them hanging out in live chess.

Chess was originally "invented" in india to distract men from actual warfare. Also, in the medivel times, pages played chess and other strategy games to sharpen there battle and thinking skills.
Chess is a highly tactical game, which i think makes the game interesting. Once you start playing chess, it's hard to stop.

personally im an american kid, an i love chess and gross violent video games, sorry to say im better at the video games though
