I see. So chess players don't have fans like athletes do then?
Why is Anand the "People's Choice" all in a sudden?

.
Yes, athletes have fans. WHEN THEY'RE PLAYING.
Carlsen is just commentating. Not playing. Nobody roots for the commentator. Except maybe the commentators mother.
What are we supposed to say? "Did you see the way Magnus worked that mike? He was amazing!!"?
Actually, yes, Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football.
The issue here, however, is that Magnus will be playing in November, again for the World Chess Championship, and most members here seem to be rooting for his opponent.
It seems as if popular backlash concerning the failure of the anticipated "Carlsen Boom" to change chess in any significant way is coming home to roost
"I do remember Carlsen backers making grandiose promises about how the Dane's win will reinvigorate chess and bring immediate material changes in how chess is viewed"
Isn't Carlsen Swedish?

I'm pretty sure he was german.
So it looks as if it is safe to say that come November most fans will be cheering for Anand. What a stunning reversal.
As a chess fan I would just like to see an exciting match with memorable games. Maybe lots of chess fans don't care who wins but really want an interesting match?
So what became all the screaming fans who were making it seem like Carlsen's victory was going to usher in a chess paradise that would last for decades?
Five months is an awfully short time in which to have already jumped ship.
That guy from Finland has just been talking too much smack, people just don't like that. Granted, he's still pretty good at chess...

Those were Carlsen fanboys. Didn't you make a few accounts of Carlsen fanboys, johnmusacha? I thought you made one where you started threads about how handsome Carlsen is, or was that someone else doing those?
That picture of Carlsen above has him with a really big head. Oh yeah, well, he does.............kinda............have............one........... doesn't he? I'm a Carlsen fan too. Still, it's good to see Vishy win a rematch.
Why is Anand the "People's Choice" all in a sudden?
(((People tend to love the underdog and we love a great comeback. Anand represents both the underdog and the comeback. It's kind of like watching a Rocky movie.)))
He can't be that much of an underdog - his accomplishments have already been recognized. He won $200,000 with a few chess games for god sakes.
As a reference:
If Nadal loses to Federer, is Nadal suddenly an underdog?
My, how quickly things change, eh?
Just five months ago it seemed like Carlsen-mania was sweeping the globe.
Based on members' comments here this week, however, it is clear that popular sentiment now rests with Anand in his rematch.
How did Anand go from being an over the hill has-been to the people's champ in just five months?
Is it because the promised "Carlsen Boom" never occurred? I do remember Carlsen backers making grandiose promises about how the Dane's win will reinvigorate chess and bring immediate material changes in how chess is viewed.
Are you all giving up on that so quickly?
