I don't know where you read that chess is an "obsessive" game, but I don't think people are obsessed with chess. I just believe that people like playing chess?
Why is chess obsessive?
Even as you get better through the years, the difficulty remains high, without ever being overwhelming.
In other words it's challenging, and at the same time offers accessible rewards. Even lost games can carry a sense of accomplishment for seeing or executing ideas you wouldn't have seen in the past.
Why do we get obsessed by chess? I don't really understand Why it is an obsessive game.
