Because it is an old game of strategy that many people have mastered, and many have invented different openings that can change the course of the game. Many options, many possibilities. The more you learn, the better you can get.

By the way it’s true - you may play for years in local community and be strong. And then you go to chesscom and you will find opponents upto to GM level. So, enjoy chess and never think that you are too weak in chess. There are a lot of players whom you defeat easily.
Bobby Fischer said that chess is all about strategy and think new moves. And Magnus Carlesn,Hikaru and many players are world best. And one player said that it is old game, many players,many strategies. So i like chess but its just all about to think and when you read the oponent games then you know how to play.
