Why is it an ILLEGAL move

Just out of curiosity ….. Why is it illegal to have a pawn on the eighth line in chess.

An example would be a position where “ in over the board” you  call checkmate ( If the pawn is converted to a knight only) but if converted to a queen it’s stalemate.

Your opponent demands you name the piece as a knight if you are claiming checkmate

You decline  and just say leave it as a pawn then I’ll promote elsewhere if you can’t see my amazing checkmate!!! Lol😳😳😳

It’s not illegal, your opponent is just salty.

You cannot.  Rules of chess say you must promote a pawn on the eighth rank. Your move is not complete until you do.

And the rules of chess force you to name the piece. Even when a knight is checkmate to any reasonable chess player😊😊😊

You can promote to a knight

I’d rather leave it as a pawn. It’s a strange rule to FORCE you to convert it. I wonder what the lLOGIC behind it is.

You couldn’t do anything if it is a pawn

The rules of chess say that you don’t have to say the words checkmate . But you have to “ nominate” the checkmate( by choosing the piece to do it) which is self evident unless you are a beginner.

Choosing a queen to stalemate?

Is that what your opponent hopes for

Anyway, the pawn on the right rank “ should” be a choice Ibut it isn’t without a reason

The eighth rank I mean

M1m1c15
I don’t really get what your trying to say.
aflfooty

It may seem a stupid choice but it shouldn’t be illegal

M1m1c15
Yeah, it just makes the game worse and harder to deal with. It’s never a good option.

What I’m saying is if a beginner converted the pawn to a queen thinking that is the right move and finds a stalemate??  the next time he is faced with a similar situation with many pawns he can convert but he has touched the piece in the same position and must move it.

He must name the piece. ??

Just leave it as a pawn on the eighth rank. Why make it an illegal move. That’s just the logic

M1m1c15
Well, that’s how the game works, just make sure it’s not gonna be bad for you. Blunders are part of chess.
aflfooty

Yes. It’s the rule so you cannot argue that.

All I’m saying is there is no logic to why it’s the rule.

It IS a stupid move but an illegal move??

M1m1c15
Yes, it just makes the game less enjoyable to play, and that isn’t worth correcting a blunder that doesn’t happen much.

A pawn can move one move forward or diagonally if taking a piece. En passe and two moves at the start.

Why it can’t move to the eighth rank and stay a pawn  doesn’t contravene what I just outlined.

This dude is actually being annoyed at the rules of chess right now

so funny

Why can the knight move over other pieces and a bishop cannot? Why do pawns take sideways? Why can’t I leave a pawn on the eighth rank? Rules are rules, they don’t have to be based off of pure logic, also it does nothing at all so there’s no point to it

Darn sneaky pawn
