Why is my rating dropping so much ?

I've been playing chess for many years, and I've always been around the 900 rating mark. However, over the past four years, my rating has steadily declined to around 500.

In fact, my rating is now even lower than when I first started playing.

I'm not sure what's going on. I've tried to analyze my games, but I can't seem to identify any specific weaknesses. I've also tried studying chess theory, but it hasn't helped.

I only play online, and I haven't changed my strategy or playing style. When I started playing in 2018, I was a complete beginner.

I'm starting to lose motivation to play. It's frustrating to see my rating drop so much, and I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to get it back up.

Has anyone else experienced a similar decline in their chess rating? If so, what did you do to address it?

I'm wondering if there could be a problem with my working memory. I've noticed that I'm sometimes forgetting things that I've just learned, and I'm wondering if this could be affecting my ability to play chess.

I'm also wondering if the chess algorithm has changed. I've heard that chess websites sometimes make changes to their algorithms, and I'm wondering if this could be affecting my rating.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

As you get better at chess, progress tends to slow down because you're moving beyond basic mistakes and tackling more complex concepts.
The drop in rating might be a sign that you've become too comfortable with your previous style of play, relying on old strategies, picking up bad habits, or even playing on tilt.
To overcome this, I found that playing slower time controls and doing puzzles really helped in improving. Taking the time to carefully analyze positions is crucial for improvement. When I study, I also write down moves, lines, and the ideas behind them. Writing things down really boosts my memory retention, and focusing on understanding the concepts rather than just memorizing moves has been far more effective for me.
