very confusing - why should all the pieces have the ability to jump!?
Why only knights can jump
Think about it... in those pawn walls... a trapped bishop would actually usefull... I think he wan'ts to lessan the blow who anybody who doesn't know how to plan to get that back peice...
Only knights should be able to jump. Its just how it should be!
agreed
here, here. i also agree
'Why only knights can jump?'
Answer: Because games would be less fun if every piece could jump, as stated in other posts.
'Why can knights jump?'
Answer: To make the game more interesting, to have a piece that doesn't move in a straight or diagonal line, and that can jump.
2 completely different questions. 2 completely different answers. My point proven!
Actually to throw a spanner in the works, the rook can also jump. It jumps over the king during castling. Sorry couldn't resist.
Also pawns can potentially jump as well if they get promoted to a knight. But I guess if they get promoted to a knight technically they're no longer pawns so it blows that argument out of the water. Sorry, just being stupid.
Knights represent men with big horse-heads and as such they are obviously able to jump over things namely the other pieces apart from the King.
I think it is unfair for the other pieces that they too do not have this jumping ability. I would propose that the Bishops, Rooks and Queens are also able to jump over pieces that are in their way. I think that this would make the game much more interesting.
It would I believe create a more fluid and attacking-orientated game.
I am going to call my new game Jumping Chess (patent pending).
It's not unfair at all if the laws to the movement of the pieces apply to both yourself and your opponent.
Bishops might mess up there robe if they jump. What do you think they are, flying nuns...
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

knights are dudes on horses, horses could probably jump over people, but most people can't... maybe lebron or a few other basketball players but i'm sure lebron wouldn't be a pawn, hmm moving a castle across a large span of distance doesn't seem right though considering how heavy they would be, plus i'm pretty sure a knight could just kill queens all day in real life. i think i just confused myself more, but long live the knight! pawns and knights are the best
the knight does not need to go in an 'L' shape, it can snake all around the board so long as it ends up on the same square
