Mostly we're either addicted or bored and have no lives...
It does help ward off early onset Alzheimer's and senile dementia though. Of course that's true; I read it right here in the forums. Some of us are too old to get early onset anything though...sigh.
There is a kind of beauty about well played chess games though that genuinely appeals to the would be artist in all of us. Serious correspondence players ("Daily" in Erikspeak) try to create a perfect game each time they play.

Some of us in life favor using our brains, and obviously have no problem doing so. It does have some benefits. Baddogno has mentioned a few. You can use your imagination to figure out some more.

I think people play chess as a means of distraction from the world. It’s probably the same type of interest people have in playing any board game, or video games. I still think video games are a somewhat bigger waste of time than chess though. But both, are a waste of time.
I like to read and play chess. According to what I hear, I'm doubly boring.
