why so unfriendly?

I don't really initiate any conversation, but if someone says 'Good luck' I'll reply 'Thank you, good luck to you too,' or something like that

Talking during you opponent's thinking time is considered rude everywhere.

@rmurray I have no idea what you are talking about.

Time for a short story about swallowing pride. Someone mentioned about being very annoyed at being told "gg" when it was anything BUT a good game. I belong to a learning group here (the Dan Heisman learning center, feel free to check us out, especially if you enjoy slow time controls), and was in one of their tournaments. I was playing a lady whose live standard rating was a few hundred points higher than mine. I didn't expect to win but I never expected to lose in five moves...

Yes....five moves....

I had actually resigned. It appeared she pulled the old "fried liver" on me and I fell for it, hook, line and sinker. I was humiliated and furious when she wrote in the chat "good game". I replied, "well, not really... But thank you for the game" (that's about as angry as I'll ever sound although I was so angry, I dang near cried out of frustration). I then left the live server. I found a friend of mine who is a much stronger player who, ad painful as it was, insisted on going over the game. From that, I learned how to avoid that attack and learned some strategies on the Italian opening/gioco pano (is that what it's called?)

A month or so later, I was playing a game with someone when I saw the familiar moves of the "fried liver" and knew what to do. Amazingly enough, I threw the opponent totally off and had a rare win. I went to the page of the opponent who first did that to me (where I had resigned after five moves) and thanked her profusely for doing that to me and teaching me the importance of the f7 square. She and I became friends as a result and even played on a team together

Swallowing pride can lead to amazing things.

Heh heh. And I jokingly refer to f7 as "the burning square"

Thanks for listening and I hope I didn't bore anyone. ;).

Also people are very unformal and unserious in the internet.

Internet is very causual in a nutshell.

Pride tastes like cod liver oil. Be sure to wash it down with orange crush.

netzach

Or a bombshell.

....what if someone says, "I hope you die, because winning is everything to me." , or something like that?

To be honest, that hasn't happened...What sort of people do you play with?

I agree with that. On the rare occasion I initiate chat in a live game it's when my own clock is running.

I always post before the game starts...

This thread was unprovoked rudeness, but the comments here are very telling

Dr_Cris_Angel

That was very clever, rmurray!  :)

This thread convinced me to learn the Japaness words for "die ugly" and use it as a greating whenever I don't actually like the person I am talking to. However, I can't really confirm that "Shini busu" means die ugly and it appers to be gender specific, does anyone here know if I should be Shini buotoko if I am addressing a man? Plus any help correctly pronouncing it would be greatly appreciated.

Shini Busu everyone!

whatadisaster

I never chat during quick games as i'm too old to chat and move at the same time.  Just had a really nice chat after a good 15/10 game, but not during it...

i lived in japan around 5 years ago, my japanese is all but forgotten these days (Learnt Chinese and it seems to have pushed out the Japanese)

Think it's shinei busaiku if i remember correctly though, 'nei' makes it more of an order than just a statement. i guess you would pronounce it shinay boo sigh coo'

I could be wrong, my brain's failing.  I can give you some Chinese insults if you want.

去死 (qu si) phonetically 'chew ssser' really hard to do phonics as it's a tonal language, the 'si' starts with the sound a snake would make, and ends with a kinda 'urgh' sound lol.  maybe check google translate, think they have sounds.

It means go and die by the way.

I usually say gl and gg every time just because I am used to it. I always get a thanks or great game from my opponents, regardless of the result.
