Chess doesn't make people crazy, it unleashes the inner craziness within people.

No, not all. However, reading and posting in the forums will definitely rot your brain and possibly cause anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, and general despair. So, carry on and join the rest of us nut jobs.

#2 and #10 explained. I dont know why people have the tendency to link things like playing a game and behaving in some way. Just like with video games.

A game with a long time control, full concentration and on the top of what I have does definitely benefit my mental health. No matter of I win or loose.

Blitz or bullit as a replacement of resting makes me angry and stressed. That logical but it is tempting: I have a bit stressy day, too many people are pulling and I hardly keep up with the pace that is required. And then… some time for myself on the couch… a few blitz games… ;-(

You will only go insane if you don't toke enough while dabbling in this warped game.                    You have been warned!

People who “went crazy from chess” already had mental issues.

that makes it worse

Chess merely amplified their problem, though this hasn’t been proven yet.

some people say it helped their problems, i say the opposite cause look what happened to fischer

I guess it really depends on the person. Not everything is “set in stone.”

true but it doesnt change the fact that some people just grow crazy and cant stop thinking about the game

I just said… it affects people differently.

One person may go crazy.

Another person may stay sane.

Etc

I’ve never seen you say something like that before.

Chess has the reputation of "driving people crazy" because some famous great players have exhibited a lot of peculiar behavior. First, these players have spent a great portion of their lives studying how to best move a  bunch of wooden pieces around an 8x8 board. Only someone who is a bit eccentric and obsessive would do that. Then, their world is populated by others like themselves, while well over 95% of the world's people either know nothing about chess or think it trivial. So most outsiders feel that dedicated chess fanatics are a bit odd.

But these folk, and lesser players that indulge themselves to a similar degree, are somewhat unusual personalities. Anyone who is somewhat of an oddball will be considered "a bit off" by a lot of "normal" people. It's not chess that makes some players extremely eccentric, it's that many extremely eccentric people are drawn to the game.
