Will Magnus Carlsens record ever be broken ?
Whether Magnus Carlsen's record of 2882 FIDE Elo rating (May 2014) will ever be broken will not only depend on raw playing strength but also on revisions to FIDE's Elo calculation system. The blog post FIDE Ratings Revisited by Vlad_G92 (also copied to FIDE Ratings Revisited on the Belgian chess federation's blog) contains several types of relevant data. See for example the side-by-side comparison of active players over specific rating bands in June 2015 and June 2025 (the original source was a post on X):
- 2700+: 44 in 2015, 31 in 2025;
- 2600-2699: 186 in 2015, 135 in 2025;
- 2500-2599: 543 in 2015, 446 in 2025;
- etc; the trend is the same in all rating bands.
Quote: "The average rating is falling at ~1 Elo/month, despite growing participation."
This is great for Carlsen's record, but not for future chess players.
We're talking about Carlsen's record rating in classical play, which FIDE calculates separately from rapid and blitz ratings. See Carlsen' s progress chart on the FIDE website.
What do you think ?
Will anybody else ever manage to have a higher FIDE ELO than 2882 ?
Will somebody maybe even break 2900, as Carlsen wanted to, but couldnt ?
