worst type of opponent to play against

Sort:
trigs

recently played a live game on here against an opponent that constantly tried to offer and accept every single trade of pieces without any regard to whether it was beneficial or not. after a million trades, i ended up winning the game in a K+R v K+R endgame, but that's not the point.

i just find opponents like this to be so boring and annoying to play against. granted, my live rating sucks lol so i have to expect games like this, but i still find it quite annoying. usually, i'll even be a dick about it and write in the chat that they could have just offered a draw before the first move if this was going to be their strategy.

do you feel the same way about opponents like this? what type of opponents bother you?

Chess is a game where most folks play for amusement only.   It is not a blood sport!   If an opponent wants to make quick trades, for example, it's just his way of enjoying the game.   I have had folks fuss at me for doing a queen exchange very quickly in the game.   I generally find it works to my advantage, to have fewer pieces on the board!   Now, to be sure, I do try to trade even, or perhaps pick a +1 trade here and there ... but I just seem to have better luck when we are down to 5 or 6 pieces, especially if I have a 1 pawn advantage, naturally.   It bothers me NOT AT ALL when folks want to make quick trades!

The absolutely worst opponent I can imagine, would be a guy that tried to MURDER you so he could win on time. That would really suck.

Raspberry_Yoghurt

I mean, nobody would want to play a against that kind of guy. You want to play chess, chill out, have a relaxing game, not get frigging MURDERED, see what I mean? So it aint really what anybody is looking for.

I dont play the opponent, i play the position on the board.

Oraoradeki

This is online chess. What do you expect?

Cubetacular

Not every trade is good so it's not too hard to take advantage if your opponent plays like that.

Pulpofeira

Well, either online or OTB, I never expect my opponent caring about me being comfortable with his/her opening choices.

I guess you'd hate to play me, then. Now, I do look for tactical shots through the middlegame, but I don't take speculative risks. I try to create some small advantage, then trade down to a winning endgame.

On the other hand, late a lot of my opponents have been blundering into little tactical traps (or perhaps they've always been doing that and I'm just seeing the opportunities better, due to doing 20-50 tactical exercises per day on another website), so my game history doesn't show this tendency very much.

Ironically, this seems to indicate that the worse you play against me, the more you'll enjoy the game!

i'll trade down to a winning endgame as well. that's not quite what i was referring to in OP.

one of the worst opponents I have played against, starts pestering me by offering draws the moment I get into an advantage. And the advantage can be as simple as an open h file for the Rook. He would keep on offering draw till I accept. I hate such losers.

wilford-n

Well, I was kind of just trying to set up the joke at the end (with a little bit of accurate information about how I play up front), but since you brought it back to the OP, I have to ask a question. Why are you offering trades if they lead to stark equality? And why are you accepting trades offered back if they lead to the same? It takes two to get to an ending like the one you described. If you want to avoid such sterility, strive to create imbalances. Turn down the trades your opponent offers that aren't to your liking. Don't offer your opponents trades that you don't want. Surely they aren't forced; otherwise I'd say you're being outplayed.

This thread sure caters to the pompous.

Of course it is. It's about judging which type of opponent you like to play least.

Canadians.

Id have to agree with the OP.  Trading off peices as fast as possible takes away interesting middle games where nasty tactics can pop up through the plentlyful lines that can be calculated.  To me, this is what makes chess fun.

Mzambelli4353

So chess isnt supposed to be fun?

glamdring27

I hate playing against hedgehogs.  Other animals I'm not so fussed about.
