You both have to be in the Live chess interface at the same time. When you are there you can easily find anyone in your friend list and challenge them.
In v3, you can do it from the Custom Challenge interface.

Whatsnu, if you are on v2 of the site, switch to v3. My understanding is that v3 does suffer from that particular disconnection bug. Alternatively, if you make a move and it seems like your opponent is taking a long time to reply, how long depends on the time control, refreshing the Live tab/window should reconnect you.
If the problem os on v3, you should report it.

Mr. Stahl, thanks for your reply. I just got an "alert" to your note today (21Sept).
About the asymmetric disconnect problem -- I am running v3. From other comments and replies the situation appears to have been heavy traffic and maybe a temporary system logjam. It only happened two evenings, when I put up those posts, and not since. I think it's over.
Generally, Chess-dot-Com is awesome. Thanks for pointing me to the FAQ telling how to send payment by mail. Please keep up the good work!
I'm new to chess.com and want to play a friend on a ten minute game but can't work out how...it only seems to want to allow us to play 1 day, 3 day moves, etc etc....
Thanks.
