Please can someone explain the timeout rules in a 10 minute game. Many games when well ahead I’ve lost by timeout although my opponent seems to have spent as much time as me during the game ?

Basically, you have to checkmate before running out of time, unless your opponent doesn't have sufficient material to mate.

You can look at the games in your archive to see how much time you actually took. It's also possible you're experiencing lag or disconnects, causing you to lose more time in the clock.
