I been reading about forks and I don't understand.  Can you capture 2 pieces at one time?

You can't take two pieces at once, but you can threaten two (or more) at once, which is the point of a fork.  If you threaten two undefended pieces, and neither one can move to defend the other, you will win a piece for free.  Here's a simple example:

Thank you so much for explaining.  My son and I have just started playing chess together and we had basic knowledge but we checked out some books at the library and they started mentioning forks, skewers and pins and I got all confused.  I asked him can we catch 2 pieces at one time? and he said he didn't know so we played a game and of course he won.  Thanks again
