so we started a game but wanted to change the time mode so he quickly resigned to stop it and he went from around 1100 to around 700 and then we just played a game thinking it was unrated, i won and he lost another 200 points. Why did he lose so much? and how does he get the points back?
Players with no games or a low number of games will have a large rating change after games.
The site uses the Glicko rating system that has a measure of rating uncertainty called the rating deviation (RD) value. A high RD gives larger rating swings after games and as more games are played, the RD value drops as does the magnitude of rating changes.
Your brother just needs to play more games and the rating will quickly get to where it would have been without those two games
