Can't spectate games from friends

I know how to spectate a game... it's a bug. Others I talk to have the same issue.
Same problem here, it says my friend is offline. Can't even spectate the guy he is playing against. But other people I can spectate... He is on his ipad btw
When I try to watch it just shows me the result of their previous game and not the one in progress. How does one fix this?
