challenging .. an unrated game

The answer is probably among the miles of topic on the forum, butI don't have time to check.
I'm playing a new-comer and though he has a rating, he wants to play unrated until he's a bit more proficient. I've tried challenging him to an 'unrated' game (selecting that option in the 'challenge' menu) .. but he's still coming back rated.
What am I doing wrong?
