Confusing Automated Message About Membership Gifting

A friend who lives across the country gifted me a membership for my birthday, but none of the features have activated, and I received an automated message saying that he “recommended” I get a membership. I no longer can reach him. Anybody know what this means?

I haven't heard of a recommendation for gifting.
Is it possible they gifted to to an email address that does not match the address on the account you're posting on?
