default resignation

This has occurred on a few occasions, I would begin a game with a limit of 30mins. The opponent would play 2-3 opening moves and then just not make any subsequent moves. Meanwhile I have to sit and watch the clock count down to zero. And hey presto I've lost the game through an apparent 'resignation'. I'm not certain what causes this, whether a) it is an opponent relying on you to abandon the game or fall asleep and claim a victory or whether b) it is a genuine bug whereby the opponent believes they are waiting on my move. In any event, I have always lost and my conclusion is this isn't very sportsmanlike or fair and in fact it ruins the chess experience for me. If these people are cheaters then sure they should be banned. Thanks for letting me know how I resigned and lost a game I was hoping to play but waiting on my opponent to move. Lewis

Chances are you need to refresh the page, and they have moved.

Kaynight - good question, and it is the one I am asking.

Vicount- I am playing via an iPhone on Wifi. I close the app and reopen to effect the 'refresh' and to ensure I am still in 'session' with the opponent. I even exit the app and re-enter. All the while, the clock is counting down on their side, and low and behold, I lose. This is probably the third occurance of this phenomena.

Essentually I am at ransom, with my options to sit the clock out and watch them lose on time, or, just abandon the game myself and lose on forfeiture or resign or some other option that doesn't involve playing the game.

As I wait I sometimes get distracted and sleep or the app closes and the 2min timeout forces my loss. In any event, I am here, I am available, I am willing to play, indeed I want to plays but the inactiveneas of the opponent, of which I believe is deliberate, results in me losing unless I wait 30mins and sit out the clock. I can't imagine why people would do this to artificially build their rating. But, I feel cheated when mine goes down. I think chess.com needs to have a system to detect these arbitrary conditions. It just ruins my experience and trust in the people whom I play with. I enjoy and love chess, I can't imagine why people would not respect the game.

Thoroughly annoyed by this strategy.
