Sadly Joeschmo is right. It is of course a big generalization, because there are many decent people who play chess, but a good way to put it would be that chess has more than its fair share of socially inept, and nerdy or childish people.

That applies to over the board chess as well. Also I have lost count of the times that I have played people over the board who seem to have an avertion to soap and water, and I have spent the game trying to hold my breath when it was my turn to play.

I once had an opponent who coughed and burped and made all many of noises when it was my turn to play. However on his turn to play he was dealy silent. When I complained he shouted that 'your a bad loser you are'.
