How does elo rating relate to ECF rating?

ECFx8+650=FIDE ELO

that's the official formula, but (ECFx7)+785=FIDE ELO is more accurate.

someone compared ratings from players with ecf and fide ratings, and got that formula. the formula you posted is the official one and most widely used, but not as accurate.

For you, that doesn't matter ;-)

Since not all ECF members are FIDE-rated and not all ECF events are FIDE-rated either, there is no granite-hard relation between the two. You could not, for instance, claim rating achievements for master norms on the basis of an ECF rating.

However, since there are many players that have both ratings and each person plays about the same in no matter which federation is rating, there is some approximate equivalence.

I know that when I got to play in a tournament in Manchester the TD used the "ECFx8+650=FIDE" formula to decide in which rating category I would participate, but I suspect I should have played in the open section by official rules.

Around 1977-1979 they used BCF x 8  +  600  !

the ECF use the code ECF x 7 + 750 = FIDE
