Become familiar with various chess openings and their variations. Study basic chess principles; i.e. open files, forks, skewers, discovered check, control of the center, etc. Review your games after the fact. There are a seemingly endless variety of chess study books available. All these things, if applied diligently, can and will help to improve your chess prowess.
Other than playing chess against the computer or someone else how do I get better?
