help for greeters like me

I've been reading some posts here, for my first time... It AMAZES me how uncivilized and down right stupid people can be!! People take this stuff WAY too seriously, like it's personal or something. It's only as personal as we all let it be. The people cussing and posting all of that mean spirited rhetoric must have REALLY pathetic lives.....

Anyway, I need help from the administrators of the web site. I just agreed to be a greeter, becuase I like this site a lot, and I like chess, and I like meeting people (excluding the people mentioned above). When I agreed to be greeter, I did not realize I would only have 3 days to move. I need a minimum of 5 days, and I prefer 7 days. I have a full time job and I own my own business. Could you change the code or programming so us greeters can choose how many days we need for our 'greeter games'? This would be helpful for me and probably others I assume. Life just gets busy sometimes....... Thank you for any help that takes place.

thanks char_pow411. at this time we will not be able to change the greeter times. greeters need to be able to move quickly and help new players. but i see your point. i'm sorry about this! thanks for your support.

I would be willing to greet and play a few games with newcomers.  What do I do?

Go to:

My Home>Account

then from there click Online Chess Settings

There should be an option to become a Chess Greeter

hope that helps!

Since it has been mentioned, I would like to suggest decreasing greeter games to 1 move per day.
Frequently I will abort games after a day if my challenger / guest doesn't go ahead and make their first move as white so that I might be able to play a game with another new guest or new member.  It has been my experience that if they don't make their first move right then, they probably never will.  I have my limit set on 10 games and it seems a waste to be tied up for three days for the 95% of guests who will make one move and never return to the game whethter they stay at the site or not.

I tried being greeter once. Got assigned three games and none of the newbies made a move. I wouldn't mind trying again, though, if greeters are particularly needed now.

Oh, and Erik: Thanks for getting rid of that thread.

When I was invited to play my first game with a greeter I thought the concept of 3 days per move was too slow. I soon came to realize that 3 days per move is actually perfect for me but that's not the point I'd like to express. If the time to move had been 7 days then I would have calculated 25 moves x 2 players x 7 days and concluded that it would take almost year to play my first game. As a newbie I might not have realized that many of the moves could have been made much faster and that if I made mine instantaneously after my opponent the time to play could have been cut to closer to 6 months. Either way I might have found the timeframe too long and that the site wasn't worth my time. So my suggestion is be a bit cautious about expecting newbies to think 5 and 7 day moves are a good thing for their first game. To include the longer timeframes I think giving the newbie a choice might be necessary. My feeling is it's unnecessarily complicated.

is all that greeters are for is to play games against newbies

Gert-Jan

I am a greeter myself and try to play one move a day.
I think that the abort game rule for greeters must be after 24 h. I have two greeter games a time and none of them move.

win more flies with honey than vineger. i'm a newbie. for whoever cares, want more chess- then grow more players. reap what you sow.for the people who GAS, thank you for the help.

To answer jerry2468, playing a newbies first game and explaining how the site works should there be any questions is all that I've done as a greeter. I've seen nothing else that's asked of a greeter.

I think a power point presentation, showing people how to navigate the site, how to play, how to view games they are playing, and how to know when they need to move, may be good for new players. Or a flash player presentation with similiar content. This assistance may cause more player retention, and cause newbies to finish their games more often.

And in response to some of the other ridiculous posts I've read on here (i.e. "eric owes us another apology, among others.....) people who post some of the ridiculous trash on the forums better be glad I am not a moderator. I would boot all stupid, ignorant, silly people, based on first offence. No questions asked, no drama. Bye bye. I do not have the patience or fortitude, or mercy to deal with stupid ignorant people-worse yet those who are so knowingly!! Yell

If you can't make a move in three days, you simply do not have time to play the game (despite your best intentions.)

There will always be a high kickout rate for things like this, but it is a valuable tool and excellent way to get people involved.  Some greeters are no doubt better than others in making a good impression for the site and being helpful to the new member getting started.

However, if a player has three days to make a move - they are entitled to the full three days.  It isn't a greeter's place to self impose their own limit.  If the time elapses.....it happens.  Hardly a big deal.

True, you have less active games, but you are hardly 'tied up'.  That's just part of the gig.

im a greeter and 99 percent of the games i play as greeter end because they dont bother to move and that makes me feel like a fool.i was thinking to stop being a greeter, but decided to continue in hope for better people

Jan 30 you will be able to be a greeter, you have to be a member for 1 month.  Just watch the amount of greeter games you select.  I left it at 10 games and got 10 new games dumped on me right away.  All made 1 or 2 moves and split.
