How can I go back to old format?

There is a menu item that looks like a square recycle symbol. That will take you Settings > Home and there is a link at the upper-right to switch. At least until v2 is retired and there are a couple move options to click after to get switched over.

What exactly do you mean? If you are asking about Live Chess use the link to it in the menu and not the quick launch play option.

Actually, looks like that has been removed for now for people not in the beta.

New format is horrible...loads on my phone oversized and unable to easily navigate!

New isn't new always, keep trying it; it becomes familiar. And, updations are always done keeping in mind the future technology.
