There's a disconnect timer, based on the time control, so if you're disconnected too long the game is claimed.

My point is that 50s, according to article you linked, is unfair and COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE in game I which have more then 2 more minutes on clock then opponent, in which I lead and when abandonments by me are extrealny rare
I was playing a game, I was wining, I was happy that I was making no blunders, which is rare for me. Then I got short network problems of some kind and returned to game being abandoned
https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/live/99416067915
When I returned to the game, I had over 1 minute left. Why did not the system let my time run and instead give me loss in winning game?
I had more time on clock at the time the game ended then the opponent, it is thus completely unfair that was given loss like this. Since I had more time, opponent can not really complain about having to wait in front of PC, because I had to wait more then them. What difference does it make if I have to wait when he is connected and they when I am not.
I understand that there might me someone with big connections problems or poor sportmanship who would join a long game, DC in first couple moves a make the opponent wait long time so the they do not lose a rating. I get that. But that should have reasonable limits !! And this is definitely not reasonable. The connection problems I had were definitely under two minutes, I was winning and these problems are extremely rare for me.
There should be no abandonment if:
* player who is disconnected does not do it regularly (either due to tech or intention). Players who do not abandon games regularly (say under 1%) should have more time before abandonment. This is the most important one. System should punish the unfair players, not the others.
* player who disconnected is clearly winning, so he clearly did not ragequit
* player who disconnected has more time that connected player anyway, then it should always wait at least until time equalizes.
* perhaps even never if playing blitz or bullet, that is not that long to wait anyway
And definitely not if they are all true at same time
I am really disappointed right now. This is not fair at all.
