Why wouldn't you lose points if you disconnected?

This needs to be addressed. It has happened to me many, many times. Someone please develop a fail-safe where in-progress games are saved with a paused clock.

Many people just disconnect and quit when they are losing. How is Chess.com going to tell the pausers from the quitters?

Looks like the OP wasn't talking about a disconnection, but rather an app crash (which I experienced this morning, losing points). Is there no way for the server to tell the difference? (I know next to nothing about the inner workings of websites, so I'm truly curious.)
I was in the process of beating someone when the app crashed and subsequently it made me resign and Iost points as opposed to it being a draw or disconnection with no points lost. Smh.
