Paid membership offers exactly the same as free membership, but in greater amounts, so I don't see that you need to trial it.
Have you followed all the free lessons, watched all the free videos. Are you doing your free tactics and workouts? Running free computer analyses? Explored the explorer? Played in a tournament? If you haven't done much of this then I think you could occupy yourself thoroughly for a month with the free stuff. You could also compare other sites - that would *certainly* fill a month.
Think very hard about whether you really want to do more than the free version offers! If so, think very hard if you want to do more the Gold offers, or more than Platinum...
It's advertised that you can get a refund within 30 days of purchase if you aren't happy, but be very careful of using this to try and get a free trial(!) For instance, your previous "free month as a gift" may invalidate you from getting a refund, but you might not be told this until you try to get the refund... Read the small print, and remember "caveat emptor"...
Finally, ask Diakonia suggests, ask support directly about getting a free month.
The free membership is your trial. You get pretty much what you get with a paid membership, only the paid membership give you more of it and you don't have to deal with ads.
The free membership is your trial.
No, it isn't. When I joined there used to be a big "try diamond membership free for 30 days" button. Now I don't see it anymore - maybe chess.com removed this offer, or maybe the free month they gave me as a gift confused the system - chess.com very frequently gives free months as a prize, Danny does it all the time for instance.
You don't just get more lessons and tactics and game analysis, you get much deeper access to game explorer, stronger computer analysis, ability to take part in multiple tournaments (this is my main interest) and host tournaments.
Yes, deeper analysis, multiple tournaments, etc. In other words: more of what the free membership offers. The free membership renders a premium trail moot, as it offers enough that the user should be able to determine if it's worth paying for a premium membership or not.
Ask support about their promise of a free trial, but I think they might reasonably say, "No".
You say, "I remember asking specifically if I would still be allowed a free trial, and was told I would." Chess.com might reasonably argue that "told I would" means "told I would if the free trial system were still in place."
You seem to know exactly what you want - multiple tournaments, and hosting tournaments. Why do you need to trial something that you are so certain about? I just received (a very positive) response from support, but it took four days. It was a tricky "cash sensitive" request like yours so probably bounced around a bit, and I hear they are snowed under with version 3 support requests.

So is the free trial system NOT still in place? If so, then yes you're totally correct.
Anyway I got a reply from chess.com who added a free week to my account which is very kind of them.
I don't believe the free trial system is actually in place explicitly. The reason is that the site offers a 30-day money back guarantee if you have never exercised that before.
The following link says there is a free trial but I'm not certain that still is the case.

I don't think I ever had a trail month, but I cannot see this option anymore.
I did receive a free month once as a gift after some problems with my account but I remember asking specifically if I would still be allowed a free trial, and was told I would.
Can anyone look into this? I'm about to have a month with more time for chess and it seemed an excellent time to properly see what a paid membership can offer.
