you can in online
Openings

There are a group of folk here who have decided to live by a tougher standard when playing Online games, not consulting any materials or in some cases not even using an analysis board, preferring to play the game as though it were a regulation OTB (over the board) game simply with much longer time controls.
However, there is no obligation to abide by those limitations unless you choose to. chess.com outlines its expectations for Online play, and those expectations allow you to consult openings manuals and databases.
Thanks for that.
By the way, RyanMK, love the pic - I'm a Manchester boy originally, and spent my youth on the Stretford End.

I have to say that I like this idea, and am seriously considering adopting it. I am a bit nervous at this stage, because although I have played for several years I have very few openings in my repertoire, so I might use reference sources for a while in openings that are unfamiliar.
Many thanks for the idea, DrawMaster.
Have I understood correctly, that when playing online games I am allowed to consult listings of openings? If that is the rule then I am happy to go with it, even though it feels a bit like cheating!
Apologies if the answer to this question is displayed really obviously elsewhere.
