sentry and CDN timeout - slowing website to a crawl

chess.com is VERY very slow to load, because its trying to load a script from browser.sentry-cdn.com I checked, its trying to load 5.11.1/bundle.min.js but the server simply times out.

This has a huge effect on the site, eg it takes a full 2 minutes before it finishes timing out, and only then can I access the Connect submenu.

Also, why oh why can I only access the Clubs section by hovering over Connect?

If I click Connect, it takes me to Forums, and there is no way of getting to the Clubs page.

Please design so when you click Connect, it takes you to a page that lists all the subsections you could visit, like Clubs and Forums!

I guess you should send that in as a bug report. When does that happen to you?

I haven't seen it.

Tapping Connect does bring up a sub-menu to let you go to any of those sections, if all the site files load. I occasionally have it not load correctly on mobile, where that icon will go to the forums instead, but a forced refresh usually loads thing correctly so it works.

For me, tapping Connect takes me to Forums.

Only hovering over connect (with the mouse) will show me that submenu with Clubs.

Also, the problem was not that files were not loading, but one file did not load for a long time - the website was half-broken while waiting for that one resource to come down (it eventually timed out).

See screenshot, the "Activity" section isn't fully loaded while its waiting for the resource.

The red "hover mouse" thing was me drawing an explanation screenshot for someone.

Yeah, for a full desktop, hover should pop up the menu and a direct click will load forums, but if that file being waited in happens to have the code for the popout menu, then that is why you aren't getting the menu.

Is the issue still happening? Maybe clearing your cache will help if so. If that doesn't work maybe opening a ticket or bug report (if that isn't impacted) will be best.

I was working around it by filtering out the problem element with ublock-origin,

so I disabled the filter and just checked - its working now.

I think the problem was simply that the host of https://browser.sentry-cdn.com/5.11.1/bundle.min.js was down, but it wasn't giving a "connection denied" error, instead it was simply pausing for a long long time.

Can you guys add an uptime monitor for those external hosts?

I'm new to chess.com, so I'm wondering if this is a regular problem or just a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

Thanks for the fast responses,

Paul

I'm not staff, so can't fully answer your question, but it's certainly possible that some CDN resources for particular members  might, depending on which regional CDN server they are on, have issues. I don't think it is very common. I have seen similar issues posted about in the past and normally those are resolved pretty quickly.
