A few years ago I was a member here and I specifically remebered there was a setting that you could toggle showing that you are offline to everybody while you are actually still signed in.
Does this setting still exist and how does one get to it? I just can't seem to find it now.
What would be the point of that?
It doesn't and I am pretty sure it never did; at least not in the 10 years i have been member of the site.
That said, we are planning to add something similar.
I'm just one of those people who cannot ignore a ringing phone!
Sometimes I just want to read notes or post notes or check out tourneys; upcoming challenges and so forth without having that bit of pressure knowing I have to leave everything now to make a move coz someones waiting for me to do it.
You see - there's already 2 people waiting for me.!

Sort it out chess.com, people want this option, i want to turn off the online status so my boss can't see I'm playing during work.

Probably just low priority.
This is a feature that would be really great because you don't always want some of your friends to be aware you're currently playing. All the major gaming "hubs" (steam/bnet/origin...) include this online/offline/busy/whatever status switch option.
I am the opposite. I will be online but it tells me I am offline during the middle of a game which I then lose. Only to be online as soon as I lose.

I've added way too many people who want to play constantly w me
many a times a note appears reconnecting, but most of the time reconnects after loosing the game by one move by opposite player. Prior to this opposite player does not play for few minutes and if he is online why he takes few minutes and i loose by aborting the game which I never abort. Simultaneously connection gets established within no seconds after one move by opposite player.

Go to https://www.chess.com/settings/live and go to "Friends Alerts" and switch it to "None".
It said I was offline and kicked me out of the tournament swiss I joined WHY???
