Suspicious vacation in bad position

Ok so is that your specific statement?  That using vacation for any reason other than bona fide unavailability is cheating?

Because you know, I myself and many others here feel that a player can use his vacation days however he sees fit.

Conflagration_Planet

If I can't figure it out in three days, I probably never will.

I was under the impression that vacation meant you're putting your chess games on hold? Isn't that what vacation is for? If you're unavailable or want/need to take a break? I thought that using it for any other purpose is abuse?

dgmisal

I think that going on vacation in a terribly lost position is in bad taste, but I would hardly qualify it as cheating.  Pathetic, perhaps, but not cheating.

In a timed game it does seem a bit unfair...to add time to your clock by vacationing...especially if you're in a losing position.

Anyways, isn't vacation automatic for premium members?  I know I was planning on losing on time once, and looked back days later to realize it automatically put me on vacation to avoid a time loss.

My thoughts exactly.

Adamplenty now clarifies his position on vacation time with "Isn't that what vacation is for? If you're unavailable or want/need to take a break?"  (Post #23).

I agree completely.  You made it sound in your earlier post #20 that vacation time should only be for when a player is unavailable.  I, however, agree that vacation can be used when a player is not only unavailable, but also when the player just feels like taking a break.  And that means in situations where the player is technically "available," but just doesn't want to bother with his games.

I think we need to have a general discussion to settle this matter.  Every week there is a new thread about some kind of "vacation" abuse.  The members here are in quite a conflict about vacation time -- this needs to be settled.

I have a ton of new ideas about modifying the vacation feature, including "buying/selling" or otherwise transferring vacation days between two people.

You don't like vacation = play live chess.

Wieners.

Now for your thoughts:

I posted the first comment in this forum 3 weeks ago. My opponent is still in vacation and hasn't played any move, but some of his finished online games are dated from 2 days ago (10/16/12). Can anyone understand this? Was I right in my first suspicion?

And more: he still has 4 games pending. Amongst these 4 games, 3 are clearly lost (they are those with the less time left).

I am sorry, but I don't think this is a normal situation and I am very close to call for adjudication...

Conflagration_Planet

His finished games must be no vacation games.

@deadastronauts:

What a stupid comment! I play online chess because I like online chess. I won't change that and decide to play fast games just because some players go on vacations. Why not advising to drop chess altogether as you are on it!...

Rookover

I still don't understand. If he is on vacation, it must be for all games, not for some games and not others. It doesn't make sense.

Rookover

I correct a little thing I said, the games he finished over the last week were blitz, not online game. But it does not change what I said, actually it makes it even worse because it clearly shows that his vacation is not genuine...  :-(

Conflagration_Planet

Some tourneys are no vacation. So if you go on vacation in games that allow vacation, you'll still have to move in the no vacation games.

Rookover

I still don't understand that concept, not from a technical point of view, but on the meaning of the vacation. To me it does not make sense to be at the same time on vacation and not on vacation. It is like saying: "that day I am at home for watching TV, but I am abroad for my holidays"... You are home or not. It is simple.

Conflagration_Planet

Some tourneys simply don't allow vacation, and some do.

Rookover: I with you...abusing vacation time stinks. Chess.com allow too much vacation time and make no attempt to stop people abusing it as far as I can see.

lxusr

You'll win eventually.  What's the big deal?

wbilfc

...the big deal is that most people start a game with the intention of finishing it within a reasonable amount of time and find it very frustrating when people delay playing just to stop you completing a winning position.
