If you are connecting via the internet and have lost your connection, the site's servers do not really know it. They just sit there blithely waiting for your latest move or communication.
There should be a better notification that i get disconnected

for some reason i get completely disconnected from games and i have to reload to actually connect back which results in me losing. the only reason i think this happens is because of the absurd amount of people online but for a person with full wifi strength i feel like that shouldn't be happening. i don't even realize i disconnect most of the time because the icon is so small and i just think my opponent is thinking and using their time up. why am I losing my rating over this.
