It's probably because you've reached the max. amount of players that can be in the tournament.

If inviting individual members you can invite 3 times the maximum players in the tournament. For a 32 player tournament the maximum invitations is 96. As you have found, by inviting groups, you can exceed the maximum.
If you get the message you can temporarily increase the maximum players in the tournament, invite more members, then reduce the maximum players to the original.
