Tournaments

Having never participated in a chess tournament before in my life, I've been looking around the site for an article or guide on tournament play, but can't find anything.  All I can find are instructions or discussion based upon esoteric terms that I'm not familiar with.  For example, I've heard the term "round robin" before, but don't have the faintest clue as to what is (I'll "google" it as soon as I get done here)!

How are these tournaments organized?  How are players matched (other than by the obvious ratings)?  Are there different types?  What type is used by Chess.com?  How long do they take given the size and/or type?  What can I expect as a player given the size or type of tournament?

I'm ready to join the 1600-1800 tournament starting on March 1.  The only thing that's holding me back is more information!!

Thanks....and HELP!!!

Have fun and I'll probably see you in the 1600-1800 tournament.

Danke schon, mein freund (Ich habe Deutche in die Universitat studiert--a long time ago I hasten to add--about the time you were born)!!  Wink  I initially saw the menu that you link, but apparently overlooked the small word "HELP" (like it was a "wing pawn")!!! (????)  In hindsight I guess I was looking for something much more conspicuous!  Smile  No doubt I will see you in the tournament!  For the time being, I'll make special note of your profile and thank you once again!

Aufwiedersehen!!!
