Understanding Time Expression & Ratings

First attempt on-line -- Grizzlytae (I believe) won on basis of time -- I haven't a clue how that occurred or if that player somehow received a benefit from the tactic -- it certainly was not on position, and I do not consider myself a slow player by any stretch of the imagination.  I believe one piece was exchanged, and I threatened check on the move.  I am definitely not accustomed to watching some clock but rather concentrating on the game.  Is there some time length expression I should key on?  Appreciate any help.  Thanks.

You've been a member of the site for a few whole hours now.  Maybe consider giving yourself some time to learn your way around:))

That was a Quick game and looks like you just lost on time.  Three games already, but you didn't mention winning a Long game after two moves.  What happened there?

That was a 2+0 game, meaning you clock counted down from 2 minutes. You moved slowly and lost--it's easy to get a better position if you use more time than your opponent. Tongue out

When you look at seeks, pay attention to the Time field.

"6 0 (blitz)" means your clock begins with 6 minutes on it--that's all you get.

"10 8 (long)" means your clock begins with 10 minutes on it, plus 8 extra seconds are added to your clock every move. This is called an increment.

Thanks likeforests -- you have helped.  I will be much more careful.  I like to win on the basis of skill -- what do they allow in a masters tournament -- 3 min/move?  The game I addressed was not even out of what I would have called the opening segment -- not close to mid-game.  I doubt if applying the, I suppose, tactic will ultimately get anyone very far and certainly with any pride.

Again, thank you for some explanation.  Although I was not aware of playing a later blitz -- tried to avoid, somehow I ended up with a 1436 blitz rating -- whatever that means on one's first sessions.
