Yeah, I actually have something similar to that going on right now. It's not vacation time, but the guy, I'm pretty sure, is purposefully waiting until the last possible minute to make every move. It's a 3 day game, so he will only make a move every 3 days, even tho I notice that he has been on many times earlier than that. This may not be as bad as what you are describing, but it's really slow. I also noticed that the majority of his wins were wins on time or players who resigned perfectly fine positions. So, I suspect that he just continually grinds out his games this way and gets people to give up because he plays so slow.

there should be a rule where if a player doesn't move in 2:30 then they automatically lose.

I don't  mind an opponent who uses the clock anyway they want to in rapid...that is the point of a clock. What I hate is VACATION ABUSE in Daily games. People who use vacation mode to avoid making a move. Chess.com...PLEASE allow NO VACATION MATCHES!!

I agree. Honestly, at this point, I really just want to finish my correspondence games so that I can stop playing on chesscom altogether.  I found that Lichess is way better.

I totally understand. In Daily, I only play 3 day games so I accept the fact that my opponent may take the entire 3 days to make a move. Sometimes I take more than a day or two myself if the position is a tough one. I usually have several games going at once so it is pretty much always my move in at least a couple of games. It is a way to beat the boredom of waiting for one opponent to move.

Yeah, in most cases I don't mind it. People have lives and things going on, if they take more of their time I usually don't notice. It's just this one guy, seems to me like he is doing it intentionally. I don't know. I guess it's nothing to get upset about. I've got about 14 games going just now, so it's not too bad. At one point I had almost 30, it got to be too much lol. I'm trying to play out the last of my games.

Win now or win later. Why does it matter?

OP doesn't understand the concept of daily/correspondence chess.

Of course I do, this is nonsense. Going on vacation to prolong a game in a completely lost position is against the rules of the website. You might want to look it up before you run off at the mouth .

Is there no time limit in these correspondence games? On gameknot default time limit is 3 days but players can agree on a different control.

Avatar of Strangemover

I don't think it's possible to play longer than 14 days per move.

Avatar of ratio56

So if judahworrell waits 14 days he wins if no move from his opponent?

Avatar of Strangemover

judahworrell, yes it is against the TOS to stall a game when in a dead lost position by going on vacation. If you believe this is happening then report it. Although I would say that eventually the opponent will either make a move or use all their vacation and time out, so the win will be yours at some point. Just play some other games content in the knowledge that the game vs the guy on vacation is in the bag.

No, it depends on the agreed time limit. 14 days per move is the maximum. Paying members have vacation time of 3 months to begin with. If they do not move within the 3 days or 14 days or whatever the system automatically places them on vacation so they do not time out (provided the tournament allows vacation). Once this vacation time is used it takes quite a while to recover it eg. If I use 2 weeks of my vacation time it will be much longer than 2 weeks before I get it back (I dont know the exact formula).

Thanks for that strangemover.

It is against the rules, yes. I just don't get why this rule exist. Some correspondence games go on for years and you complain about a little vacation. If you have a won position you will win eventually.

You can just play a new game.

Well, aside from the fact that this is clearly poor sportsmanship and the act of a sore loser. Since you are defending internet trolling I take it you don't play much on the board. It is considered quite standard chess etiquette to resign lost positions. This is hardly new. Players have been observing this polite sportsmanlike ethic for hundreds of years. It is you who are trying to reinvent the wheel here, not I. Players can already stall out a win by 3 to 14 days on a correspondence game as well, but to go on vacation in a clearly lost position is just rude. Not to mention, it's a cheap shot at a win on the clock. People don't always play every day. Maybe I'm trying to clear all my correspondence games so I don't have to check into this site as regularly. You mean to tell me, you think it is perfectly polite to force a clearly won opponent to check in every few days for four months to simply avoid losing a decisively won match on time? Either you are just wasting my time with this argument for the purposes of trolling, or you have no concept of chess etiquette and/or sportsmanship. This is even considered rude on standard time controls, much less correspondence time. People have lives. Stop wasting people's time. And stop white knighting rude trolls.

I get playing out a few moves just to practice or try to force a blunder, but typically you just resign lost positions. Running the clock is the ugly act of a spoiled child, even worse in correspondence. Maybe not so much if there is time pressure, but long games, definitely.

An imaginary word used to troll people on the internet? Got it!
