What are the specifications for custom background pictures?

I'm trying to upload a picture as a background, but it doesn't take. I get no errors or warnings, just nothing happens when I try uploading. Are there restrictions regarding size or height/width that I need to know of?

It succeeded finally. I still have no idea why some work and some don't. Thank you for your help anyways happy.png

goodness knows... i do know that my old profile background in v2 doesn't work in v3, since there is no tiling option...
