Is not patriotism or not patriotism cuestion, it is a respect cuestion..respect for the people who feels basque, respect for an history culture and lenguage, the Euskara, the oldest in Europe, probably older than latin, an Identity and language which Franco wanted dead not long ago, almost getting it and has been tracing these 30-40 years through the efforts of many people for an education in Euskera..if supposed to be a patriot not want a legacy so can disappear and demand fairness to other nations in our state in a page internationally discriminate hope that for some reason to discriminate our private? is normal to want that discrimination does not exist and try to change it. It is of common sense.BASQUE COUNTRY THERE!

Dear staff of chess.com,

Maybe the staff of our dearest chess.com does not know exactly that wanting the Ikurriña-flag is not an expresion of some kind of terrorism... Wanting the Bask-flag is simply -as also peoi and other people said above- an expresion of repect for your own history, culture, language and habitat.

I will say it again: Spain is a very complex country; writers like Unamuno and Ortega y Gasset already wrote about it! Spain has a complicated and slow system of "Comunidades Autónomas", created after Franco died (1975) and with the Constitution of 1978. This is a reality Spain as to deal with nowadays! Maybe it will change one day, but now it is like it is!

But to the point: There are some people in Basque country that want the independence (also for Basque Country in France and Navarra in Spain). This people want it by putting bombs and killing inocent people... and that is of course not the right way. We are of course talking about ETA, who started to be active let say late 50 years of the past century. First like a "cultural movement" pro Basque identity, identity and language in the very difficult times of Franco-regime; later on (during the last decade of Franco and after Franco) like a cruel terrorist movement and still is!

There are also other people who also want "independence" (or at least an other form of government or relationship with Madrid), but they want to archieve this by a pacific, dialogic and democratic way. That is their own right; if they want to do so, they are free to do it! Those people are active in politics and in culture (writing novels, drama and poetry and that kind of stuff...) and are free to do so!

Obviously there are some people here that want a symbol that represents their cultural habitat! It is also possible that they even don't want independence or they have not even thought about it because the play chess and are to busy with other problems of the modern Spanish/Basque society... They simple want their (small) piece of identity!

So why is it not possible to choose the Basque flag? A simple question, I hope, looking for a simple answer...

Thanks chess.com and keep up the good work!

Pulpofeira

It's obvious it should be possible. My guess is Galicians and Catalans did insist on it at certain moment, but of course I really don't know. I'd like the staff to comment about this.

Where's Erik?

pdela

I think historical remarks about Franco and mentions to ETA or Independence must be omitted, it is not really the point

xake33

waw !!! the threat is burning !!!! nice :-) welcome peio !!! i see your threat , very good. Denon artean lortuko dugu!!! ( we get it with everybody) i think that is the moment for an answer to chess.com, i dont belive anybody of chess.com dont saw the question.

this question is more crazy when you can choice euskara ( euskara is the basque language) like a language in chess.com if even anything happens :-( and not ikurriña ( our flag) Anybody understand this?????

References to Franco and the recent history of the Basque Country and the Basque were for people to know that it is a language that still drags the attempted annihilation for many years, and especially since read a review of the kind of " patriotism traveling cure " , but you're right , nothing beyond the respect for the identity of each matter
